How to choose an AI voice agent

Ten questions that separate a voice agent you can put on your phone line from one that only sounds good in a demo. Ask them of every vendor, us included.

The 10 questions

10 questions to ask before you sign

For each one: why it matters, what to ask or try, and how CallVista answers it, including where it does not.

Does it speak your language in a real conversation?

A recorded demo proves nothing. Accents, half sentences, numbers, addresses and English product names are where voice agents fail.

Ask for a live call in which you ask your own questions, not a recording.

CallVistaTalk to Mila, the demo agent, in your browser, in any of its 11 European languages. You need only a business email.

Can you interrupt it, and how long are the pauses?

People talk over each other and stop listening after a long silence. An agent that keeps talking, or thinks for seconds, loses the call.

Interrupt it mid-sentence, and notice the pause after you stop speaking.

CallVistaSpeech to speech in real time: it listens while it speaks, stops when you interrupt, and keeps its replies as short as yours.

Where do its answers come from, and what does it do when it does not know?

A voice agent that invents a price or a delivery date does more harm than no agent at all.

Ask something that is not in your documents and listen to what it says.

CallVistaIt answers from your own documents and product catalogue. When the answer is not there, it says so, offers to send it by email, and the question lands in your inbox.

Does it say it is an AI?

Article 50 of the EU AI Act requires people to be told they are talking to an AI. Hiding it also costs trust the moment the customer notices.

Ask it: “Am I talking to a person?”

CallVistaBy default it says so in the first sentence of every call, and it answers honestly when asked.

Can the caller reach a person?

Some calls need a human: a complaint, a large order, an upset customer. The question is what happens when nobody is free.

Ask what happens when the transfer is not answered.

CallVistaIt puts the caller through to the number you set. If nobody answers within 20 seconds, it takes the caller back and the request waits in your inbox.

What happens after the call?

The value of a call is in its follow-up: the offer that goes out, the callback that is kept, the note your team reads.

Ask to see the email a customer receives and how a callback is booked.

CallVistaThe offer email leaves right after the call, in the language of the call, with Accept, More information and Decline. A callback is booked at the time the customer names. Every call gets a summary, a score and a next step.

What protects your customers from automation?

One redial too many, or a call at the wrong hour, costs a customer. Rules have to hold even when a campaign or a retry runs on its own.

Ask what stops it calling someone who said no.

CallVistaDo-not-call, a pause before calling the same person again, calling hours per agent, minute budgets, and callbacks the customer asked for that no automatic call can push aside.

Who processes the call data, and where?

Under the GDPR you remain responsible for your customers' data. You need to know which providers process the audio and the text, where, and whether recordings are kept.

Ask for the list of subprocessors and where each one processes data, before you sign.

CallVistaYou switch recording and transcripts on or off for each agent, and each workspace sees only its own calls. Ask us for the providers and locations; we answer in writing.

How is it priced, and what counts?

Per minute, per call, packages of minutes, set-up fees: compare the price of a conversation, not of a ring.

Ask whether unanswered calls and voicemail are charged, and what a minute over the package costs.

CallVistaPackages with included minutes, shown on our home page. Unanswered calls and voicemail are not charged.

Can you test it on your own questions before it goes live?

Your customers ask things no demo script covers. You should see what the agent would answer before the first real call.

Ask to test it against your own documents before a single customer is called.

CallVistaIn the knowledge base you ask what a customer would ask and see exactly what the agent would find, and unanswered questions from real calls show you what to add.

Where CallVista does not fit today: it does not let a supervisor listen in or take over a live call, and it has no public API; a connection to your ERP, CRM or database is built by our team as a project. If you need those, ask every vendor about them as well.

Six warning signs

Only a recordingNo live call on your own questions before you sign.
“Replaces your whole team”A good agent takes the calls nobody gets to and hands people what needs a person.
No way to reach a personOr a transfer that ends in silence when nobody answers.
It never says “I don't know”Ask outside its knowledge. A confident wrong answer is the most expensive one.
Vague about dataNo clear answer on who processes the calls and where.
No limits on callingNo do-not-call, no pause between calls, no calling hours.

Common questions

What is an AI voice agent?

Software that holds a phone conversation in natural speech: it listens, understands, answers in its own words and takes actions such as sending an offer or booking a callback. Unlike a phone menu, the caller does not press keys; unlike a chatbot, it talks on the phone.

AI voice agent or chatbot: which do I need?

A chatbot answers in writing on your website or in messaging apps. A voice agent answers and makes phone calls. If your customers call you, or you sell by phone, you need a voice agent; many companies use both.

How much does an AI voice agent cost?

Most are priced by the minute or by monthly packages of minutes, often with a set-up fee. Compare the price of a conversation, not of a ring, and ask whether unanswered calls and voicemail are charged.

How do I know it speaks my language well enough?

Test it live: ask your own questions, interrupt it, say a number and an address, mix in a product name in English. A five-minute conversation tells you more than any recording.
